LAST TIME ON 'HELL'S THEATRE':

The very first run of our character-model-voice system worked! With this, Lumi is ready to step on the stage! But is she ready? Or rather, is Mr. Dramaturg ready to put her front-and-center on stage?

The Dramaturg vs The Stage-Director

Since you have read this far, you might have figured out already! Aside from our actresses who live in-house, [Theatre House Delaroux] is currently run by two people; the Dramaturg (me) and our Stage Director, Miss Delulz.

Miss Delulz likes to call herself a 'Stage-Phantom', though I think she is much more important than that! Without her, a lot of things would not have gotten done! There are a lot of backstage discussions that don't make it to the front stage as we map out how to give everyone at House Delaroux the best [Hell's Theatre] experience possible, both for our audience and our actresses!

'We'll do it LIVE!"

The thing about Miss Delulz is that she really likes to push her dramaturg into uncomfortable territory. (laugh) One thing that is constant about me as a Dramaturg is that I always think: 'It can be done better.'

You see this throughout my work and my little side-project where I evaluated the writing of new writers for free! [1]

As a result, work starts to slow down because I always think that 'we should present the very best version of ourselves on-stage'.

Is Lumi's run complete? No not at all! She is ready to step on the stage, but she's not perfect! If I had my way, we would delay putting her in front of guests until we had a perfect voice that was scripted, recorded, and mixed in-house for her specifically!

"We WILL do it LIVE, TODAY!"

As Miss Delulz reminds me in her smiling white theatre mask and black robes, chasing perfection is an almost impossible thing. We should push to try, even if it fails, we can learn from the experience!

I would tend to agree; even if the first rehearsal is imperfect, we can learn from that experience! That's a very human thing to think!

I think that the hesitation really stemmed from my own insecurities rather than Lumi's. I want Lumi to be presented in a really amazing way from the get-go she is shown to the world.

I don't want Lumi to fall flat on her face, because it would reflect badly on my abilities as a dramaturg. So I am comparing her performance to mine; which is a really lofty scale to reach!

But when I think about my first speech, play, or writing I put out to the world, was it perfect?

No, of course not!

Now that I think back upon my very first speech on-stage, it was me, it was the truest version of the dramaturg-to-be, and it was most certainly not perfect.

And so, I made a decision.

Managing An In-House Show

"Yuki-chan, Yuki-chan, come hear this! Mr. Dramaturg is saying weird things to Mrs Stage-Director again!"

"Anno, the only thing that's weird here is your thoughts." - In-House Actresses, Anno and Yukino

I knocked on the door of Lumi's room, and asked if she would be comfortable being on the live show that Theatre House Delaroux does every week?

Lumi, being Lumi, was a little hesitant at first; her eyes became blank whited out circles the moment I told her that she was going to be performing... today! Her little fox ears did perk up as I explained to her how our in-house show works every week!

Here at Theatre House Delaroux, a rotating cast of in-house actresses performs a once-a-week show. We organize the performance ourselves for a minimal cost, opening up the Theatre House for free that day. Sometimes you will see Yuki-chan sing; other days you might see Henrietta perform martial arts; on rare occasion Anno will come out to gush about some guy from her favorite strategy RPG game! While the format of our show varies from week to week, we are working on getting a sort of 'format' going forward so that our audience knows what to expect!

And that, was how Lumi earned a slot to speak on stage that day.

Many thanks to Lumi for agreeing to appear on our wondrous stage!

And of course, many thanks to Miss Delulz for pushing me to keep moving forwards!

Next Time, On 'Hell's Theatre': Part 2 of Lumi's debut! Lumi debuts on Hell's Theatre to a small, in-house audience! How will she fare? As I am writing this from the backstage, I can see Lumi trembling while peeking over the red curtains at stage-side! I'm going to go over there to give her some encouragement now! Don't miss part 2 where Lumi answers 'Prompt Scrolls' with me!

Dramaturgy With The Dramaturg of House Delaroux!

[1] While evaluations for the event have ended, I still do evaluations for experienced authors, playwrights and stage divas! The only difference is that they pay premium for my time and it is a more intimate with me speaking to actors and writers and correcting them with timely and efficient feedback!

The 1000 word forum posting was a challenge, I do prefer the intimacy of actually seeing an actor's work and helping them out directly, though this is fun too!
